Vocational Education Certificate Programs

Career & Technical Education

Madera Adult School Career and Technical education department offers daytime and evening classes to accommodate student needs. For a detailed course description or additional information visit the Madera Adult School registration office at 955 W. Pecan Avenue, Monday – Thursday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Evening classes are printed in color. Classes are held at Madera Adult School, unless otherwise noted. Vocational Education course fees are nonrefundable.

CAREER FOUNDATION
Typing/Keyboarding

Learn touch typing, setting margins, tabs, typewriting rules, letters and enveloped; speed and accuracy building.

10-Key Calculation

This 9-week/30-hour class teaches the 10-key touch method, computing business math problems (interest, discounts, sales slips, etc.); verifying accuracy and proofreading/editing business documents. Includes 10-key certification.

Office Procedures

This 9-week/30-hour class helps students understand the importance of customer service, team work, telephone techniques, oral and written communication, and many of the “soft skills” of employment.

Basic Business Skills

This 18-week/60-hour class teaches comparing/proofreading, hand printing, handwriting, spelling, word meanings, completing business forms, calculating, filing, referencing and telephoning.

Record Keeping I

This 18-week/60-hour course covers entering, verifying, and filing data; keeping/analyzing budgets; credit records; cash receipts; checking accounts; petty cash; sales clerks; retail sales; and accounts receivable clerks. *Weekly: 2 hrs. Lecture/17 hrs. Lab with assistance

RecordKeeping II

This 18-week/60-hour course covers stock record clerks; purchase order clerks; accounts payable clerks; small business records; financial statements; and payroll clerks *Weekly: 2 hrs. Lecture/17 hrs. Lab with assistance

Business Communications

This 6-week course sharpens proofreading and editing skills using handwritten, printed and computerized activities; provides a thorough review of English and grammar rules.

Data Entry

This 18-week/60-hour course consists of a keyboarding/keypad tutorial, skill building activities, calculator, and data entry activities using source documents similar to those used in business (a mail-order clothing catalog, a automobile insurance company, a hotel, and a big-city hospital). This is an 18-week/60 hour entry level course consisting of the study of accounting from simple debits and credits through the complete accounting cycle; both for a service business and a merchandising business; some automated, QuickBooks, and Excel applications. Bookkeeping/Accounting II

This18-week/60 hour course includes accounting for a merchandising business organized as a corporation; special journals, payroll records, payroll accounting, taxes, business transactions, uncollected accounts receivable, depreciation, notes interest, accrued items, voucher, petty cash and inventory systems; some automated, QuickBooks, and Excel. QuickBooks Pro 2004

This 35-hour course will provide a comprehensive coverage of QuickBooks Pro 2004. Through the first half ofthe class, you will receive an introduction to QuickBooks and a review of accounting principles; you will work with customers and vendor transactions; and create a customer file from scratch. In the second half of the class, you will create main accounts and subaccounts of physical inventory, set up and use payroll accounts and deal with banking and credit card accounts; you will leam how to further classify and categorize your data; and customize your QuickBooks files and close the books. The purpose of this class is to familiarize the student with beginning/advanced medical keyboarding, medical language skills, and grammatical and office skills to develop confidence.

Medical Assistant/Insurance Billing/Coding

This 18-week/60-hour class provides practical understanding of the medical office, clinic or hospital billing systems; billing procedures, practices, governmental medical programs, documentation, and workflow of insurance companies are covered; plus a strong foundation in the procedures using the ICD-9 Code Book and CPT Procedural Coding Book; and creating billing documents.

Medical Assistant/ Insurance Billing/ Advanced Coding

In this 45-hour class you will become proficient in diagnostic and procedural coding using the ICD-9 Code Book and the CPT Procedural Coding Book. Prerequisite: Medical Assistant/ Insurance Billing/Coding.

Medical Transcription

Prerequisite: MS Word or WordPerfect. In this 18 week/60 hour class you will sharpen your proofreading and editing skills; provides a of English and grammar rules; reviews medical terminology by studying prefixes, suffixes, and roots; introduces a variety of medical documents; and gives you a thorough practice transcribing documents dictated by numerous different doctors. Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA)

This is a training course designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to pass a State Certification Test and become employed as a Certified Nurse Assistant and/or Home Health Aide. This is a 210-hour course approved by the California State Department of Health and Education. It consists of theory, laboratory practice and hospital experience. Certified Nurse Assistant and Home Health Aide graduates receive a certificate as well as a CPR card. The CNA/HHA certificate program requires attendance for the full semester. Open enrollment is not an option. Classes are in conjunction and will not be taught separately. Uniforms will be required. Fingerprints and background checks are required by the Department of Health Services. A reading pre-test is required before entering CNA and HHA courses. Forms will be distributed at registration. Fees due immediately upon acceptance into CNA courses. Fees due to Madera Adult School include: textbook fees, $5 CPR card fee and $55 program fee. Physical, TB test, uniform and supply fees may vary. Specific information about fees will be given at registration. Only money orders or bank cashier checks are acceptable. Fingerprint card, CNA/HHA applications, and fees must be submitted together on the first day of class.

Medical Terminology
A comprehensive, two-semester course that teaches medical terminology through a unique combination of anatomy and physiology, word building principles, phonetic “sounds like” pronunciations and a variety of application exercises. Certificate upon completion. Three (3) units of college credit given. Must bring book to first class. Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED.

HEALTH PROFESSIONS (FIELD)

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
This is a training course designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to pass a state certification test and become employed as an EMT 1A. EMT graduates receive a certificate as well as a CPR card. The EMT certificate program requires attendance for the full semester. Open enrollment is not an option. Classes are in conjunction and will not be taught separately. Uniforms will be required. Fingerprints and background checks are required by the Department of Health Services. Reading pre-test is required before entering EMT courses. Forms will be distributed at registration. Fees due to Madera Adult School immediately upon acceptance into EMT courses include: textbook fees, $3.77 name badge fee, $5 CPR card fee and $15 supply fee. Firefighter
Manipulative and technical training in basic concepts of fi re department organization, miscellaneous equipment and tools, fi re behavior and extinguishment theory, safety, selfcontained breathing apparatus and portable fi re extinguishers. The course also provides training in ropes, knots, hitches, hoses, nozzles, appliances, ground ladders, forcible entry, and confi ned space rescue. The student is responsible for obtainng an EMT or fi rst responder rating. Students must supply instructor-approved personal protective equipment (required instructional material). Enrollment is limited. Physician’s clearance for strenuous activity required.

Introduction to Computers

This 30-hour class is an introduction to computer systems, peripherals, setting up a computer, working with windows, starting programs using a mouse, saving files, working with folders, moving and copying files; launching the explorer, navigating the web, searching the web, printing web pages, using hyperlinks; sending and receiving E-mail, responding to E-mail, deleting messages, moving and copying messages, and attaching files .

MS Office 2003 Suite

This 60-hour class includes an introduction to all of the Microsoft Office productivity applications. Word/WordPerfect/Works - This course may be taken as a 30 hour beginning, 30 hour intermediate, or a 60 hour comprehensive course depending on your need or expertise. Techniques covered include basic word processing formatting, tables, columns, merging, macros, desktop publishing, and more.

WordPerfect Office Suite

This 60-hour class introduces you to WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, Paradox, and Presentations. Techniques covered includes basic word processing formatting, tables, columns, merging, macros, desktop publishing; spreadsheets, database, and presentations.

Advanced WordPerfect

This 30-hour class lets you practice advanced formatting, macros, power tools, and advanced graphics tools; simulation.

MS PowerPoint

This course may be taken as a 30-hour beginning, 30-hour intermediate, or a 60-hour comprehensive course depending on your need or expertise.” You will learn the principals of presentation, design, creation, and execution; create slides, outlines, speaker notes and audience handouts; include text, clip art, graphs, tables, charts, and animation.

MS Publisher

This course may be taken as a 30-hour beginning, 30-hour intermediate, or a 60-hour comprehensive course depending on your need or expertise. Learn to create business cards, flyers, brochures, signs, announcements, cards for all occasions, and more.

Web Page Design

In this 60-course, students are introduced to HTML, Dreamweaver and Fireworks, or FrontPage; learn to create web pages, web site management, layout, and uploading; work with interactive web sites , forms, style sheets, and multimedia.

Custodian
Students train for entry level custodial positions. Learn proper maintenance techniques, such as window cleaning, carpet and floor maintenance, sanitation, graffiti removal, safety and outdoor procedures and other required skills. Students will receive classroom instruction and hands-on training. Must complete a 16-hour course to receive a certificate of completion.

Customer Service Academy

These workshops are designed to provide the student with key skills and attitudes in order to effectively meet the needs of customers. The importance of excellent communication with customers and co-workers will be stressed. Students may choose to enroll in a single class or complete the entire academy and receive a certifi cate of completion. All classes are on Wednesdays.

Customer Service
This course provides the participant with certain key sales skills and attitudes to effectively meet the needs of customers. The participant will be introduced to the concept of internal and external customers, customer satisfaction and customer retention. Topics will also include developing a positive attitude, handling complaints and sales skills.

Attitude in the Workplace
This course is designed to provide the participant with certain key skills in the area of attitude so that they may effectively maintain a positive attitude at the workplace and at home. The participant will be introduced to the concept of how attitudes are communicated, the three types of attitudes and how to adjust one’s attitude. Topics will also include the primary causes of a bad attitude, turnaround strategies to battle them, and specific techniques to raise the attitude of others.

Team Building
