Madera Adult School Career and Technical education department offers daytime and
evening classes to accommodate student needs. For a detailed course description

10-Key Calculation
This 9-week/30-hour class teaches the 10-key touch method, computing business math
problems (interest, discounts, sales slips, etc.); verifying accuracy and proofreading/editing
business documents. Includes 10-key certification.
Office Procedures
This 9-week/30-hour class helps students understand the importance of customer service,
team work, telephone techniques, oral and written communication, and many of the “soft
skills” of employment.
Basic Business Skills
This 18-week/60-hour class teaches comparing/proofreading, hand printing, handwriting,
spelling, word meanings, completing business forms, calculating, filing, referencing and
telephoning.
Record Keeping I
This 18-week/60-hour course covers entering, verifying, and filing data; keeping/analyzing
budgets; credit records; cash receipts; checking accounts; petty cash; sales clerks; retail sales;

RecordKeeping II
This 18-week/60-hour course covers stock record clerks; purchase order clerks; accounts
payable clerks; small business records; financial statements; and payroll clerks *Weekly:

Business Communications
This 6-week course sharpens proofreading and editing skills using handwritten, printed and
computerized activities; provides a thorough review of English and grammar rules.
Data Entry
This 18-week/60-hour course consists of a keyboarding/keypad tutorial, skill building
activities, calculator, and data entry activities using source documents similar to those used
in business (a mail-order clothing catalog, a automobile insurance company, a hotel, and a

Bookkeeping/Accounting I
This is an 18-week/60 hour entry level course consisting of the study of accounting from
simple debits and credits through the complete accounting cycle; both for a service business
and a merchandising business; some automated, QuickBooks, and Excel applications.

This18-week/60 hour course includes accounting for a merchandising business organized
as a corporation; special journals, payroll records, payroll accounting, taxes, business

voucher, petty cash and inventory systems; some automated, QuickBooks, and Excel.

QuickBooks Pro 2004
This 35-hour course will provide a comprehensive coverage of QuickBooks Pro 2004.
Through the first half ofthe class, you will receive an introduction to QuickBooks and a
review of accounting principles; you will work with customers and vendor transactions; and
create a customer file from scratch. In the second half of the class, you will create main
accounts and subaccounts of physical inventory, set up and use payroll accounts and deal
with banking and credit card accounts; you will leam how to further classify and categorize
your data; and customize your QuickBooks files and close the books. Basic computer skills

Medical Assistant/Insurance Billing/Coding
This 18-week/60-hour class provides practical understanding of the medical office, clinic
or hospital billing systems; billing procedures, practices, governmental medical programs,
documentation, and workflow of insurance companies are covered; plus a strong foundation
in the procedures using the ICD-9 Code Book and CPT Procedural Coding Book; and creating
billing documents.

Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA)
This is a training course designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to
pass a State Certification Test and become employed as a Certified Nurse Assistant and/or
Home Health Aide. This is a 210-hour course approved by the California State Department
of Health and Education. It consists of theory, laboratory practice and hospital experience.
Certified Nurse Assistant and Home Health Aide graduates receive a certificate as well as
a CPR card. The CNA/HHA certificate program requires attendance for the full semester.
Open enrollment is not an option. Classes are in conjunction and will not be taught separately.
Uniforms will be required. Fingerprints and background checks are required by the
Department of Health Services. A reading pre-test is required before entering CNA and
HHA courses. Forms will be distributed at registration. Fees due immediately upon acceptance
into CNA courses. Fees due to Madera Adult School include: textbook fees,
$5 CPR card fee and $55 program fee. Physical, TB test, uniform and supply fees may
vary. Specific information about fees will be given at registration. Only money orders or
bank cashier checks are acceptable. Fingerprint card, CNA/HHA applications, and fees
must be submitted together on the first day of class.

Firefighter
Manipulative and technical training in basic concepts of fi re department organization,
miscellaneous equipment and tools, fi re behavior and extinguishment theory, safety, selfcontained
breathing apparatus and portable fi re extinguishers. The course also provides
training in ropes, knots, hitches, hoses, nozzles, appliances, ground ladders, forcible entry,
and confi ned space rescue. The student is responsible for obtainng an EMT or fi rst responder
rating. Students must supply instructor-approved personal protective equipment (required

to E-mail, deleting messages, moving and copying messages, and attaching files .
MS Office 2003 Suite
This 60-hour class includes an introduction to all of the Microsoft Office productivity applications.
Word/WordPerfect/Works - This course may be taken as a 30 hour beginning,
30 hour intermediate, or a 60 hour comprehensive course depending on your need or
expertise. Techniques covered include basic word processing formatting, tables, columns,
merging, macros, desktop publishing, and more.

These workshops are designed to provide the student with key skills and attitudes
in order to effectively meet the needs of customers. The importance of excellent
communication with customers and co-workers will be stressed. Students may
choose to enroll in a single class or complete the entire academy and receive a

Customer Service
This course provides the participant with certain key sales skills and attitudes to effectively
meet the needs of customers. The participant will be introduced to the concept of internal

Attitude in the Workplace
